SPCA volunteers are ambassadors for our organisation. They are extremely dedicated and professional, taking great pride in their work and satisfaction from knowing that their contribution really makes a difference.

If you have the time, please consider joining our fantastic team of volunteers and help us make a difference for the animals of Canterbury! We have a variety of jobs that require volunteer assistance such as, Animal Centre support, Event and Administration support, Opshop Assistant and more. See below for details.

Animal Centre Volunteer

Volunteering at our Animal Centre is a big commitment but one you will find extremely rewarding. We require assistance during weekdays and on weekends. You will help with a variety of tasks, including;

  • Cleaning - animal cages, centre buildings etc.
  • Feeding animals.
  • Grooming and caring for animals.
  • Laundry.
  • Welcoming visitors to our Centre.
  • And any other support services as required.

If you are keen to assist, there are some conditions you must consider before sending in your application form;

  • Centre volunteers must be 17 years or over.
  • You must be able to commit to a roster, working at least twice each month for six months.
  • You must complete our training programme prior to starting work at our Centre.
  • Prior animal care and/or volunteer experience is an advantage but not essential.

To apply, you must attend an induction evening held at our Animal Centre every month. You must register your attendance so please email our Volunteer Department for details and to confirm your participation.

Event and Administration Volunteer

Volunteering to assist with fundraising, events and administration, is the ideal way for ‘busy’ people to support our organisation, as there is no commitment expectation. If you are outgoing, friendly, well presented and prepared to give anything a go – this could be the role for you! Your assistance may be required for a variety of duties including;

  • Manning a stall, e.g. sausage sizzles, community events etc.
  • Bucket/Donation collecting, e.g. SPCA Annual Paws Appeal.
  • Baking or supporting our annual Cupcake Day event.
  • Folding letters and stuffing envelopes.
  • Basic administration support.
  • And any other support services as required.

You must be 16 years or older to join this programme, however children are welcome to participate as long as they are always accompanied by an adult.

Most activities are held on weekends but occasionally events are scheduled during weekdays and in the evening. For more information or to become an event volunteer, please email us  or phone (03) 344 4773.
